CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

BROOKE

On the trip back to New York City, Brooke and Dylan talked more about her relationship with her mother. Brooke confided that Gran had hoped the summer apart would give Brooke more freedom.

“Has it?” Dylan asked.

Brooke thought about it. She’d sat or walked on the sand wishing for something different from her life in Ellenton, new work opportunities, and new, healthy relationships. She’d found them all. “Yes. I came to Florida hoping for changes in my life. I wasn’t ready to think of making a commitment to anyone because I had to find myself first. With you, I’ve found a part of me I’d been missing. I will be forever grateful to you for giving me the gift of art and discovering that part of me.”

He glanced at her and focused back on the road, but not before she saw the look of tenderness he gave her. It seemed strange to her to feel so much love for someone this quickly, but then she’d entered the summer wanting to be someone open to possibilities, love, and the joy of living. If only life would continue that way for her.

As soon as they returned to the hotel, they dressed for the opening at the art gallery. Along with the black heels, Brooke chose to wear a sleeveless black linen sheath with a funky, large-bead necklace in black, white, and red. Studying herself in the mirror, she thought she looked perfect for a gallery opening.

Dylan thought so too. He let out a low whistle when he saw her emerge from her bedroom.

She smiled, pleased with herself.

They took a cab to the gallery and arrived shortly after four. Claire had invited some special guests to the show before it opened to others, and as they entered the building, Claire rushed over to them. “I think two are sold already. But Dylan and Brooke, you need to mingle with these big buyers if we want to sell more.”

Dylan took hold of Brooke’s hand. “C’mon. Let’s make a few sales.”

She grinned and allowed him to lead her to a heavy-set, older man with a shock of white hair. He stood gazing at pictures while leaning on a cane.

“Hello, Laurence,” Dylan said, reading the name on a prominent name tag. “I’m Dylan Hendrix. Can I answer any questions you might have about some of these pieces?”

The man shook Dylan’s hand. “I’ve been admiring a few. I especially like the one titled ‘Beach Sunrise.’ There’s something about it that pulls me in.”

Dylan winked at her. “It’s a collaborative piece with my partner, Brooke.”

Shocked but pleased, Brooke allowed a smile. This painting was the one where she’d suggested placing a few colors.

Laurence beamed at her and turned to Dylan. “In that case, I will purchase it. I love stories behind various works. My wife will be pleased with this one.” He turned and said, “Margery, come here. I want you to meet the artists.”

A woman with a grandmotherly build walked over to them smiling. She held out her bejeweled hand to Dylan.
